NCDH Dive Club

The Legend of NCDH Dive Club

In the classic tradition of some of the early East and West Coast dive clubs, we came about because a group of us all loved the same thing. Namely diving, with all the associated fraternal and social applications that tend to follow along with submergence. Over the last few years this loosely associated group of divers have made their marks in a lot of places throughout the world and believe it or not the T-shirts and stickers show up in the darndest places! To make along story short, until a few years age we just went diving with no group identity. As it turns out, North Carolina divers are among the best in the world. We are not exactly intimidated by things that make some divers cringe, like 4ft+ seas (hey, this is a great day!), long boat rides (Zzzzzzzz), friendly barracudas (Hell, if Slate feeds one I can too!) sharks (Hey Bill, your buddy's back!), or water that might be a bit deeper than ordinary (yeah, I know the computer says 180 feet but depth is relative.) So once when a group of intrepid souls were in Florida and the seas were a bit rough rather than cancel the dive like the other thirty people on the boat wanted to do they instructed the captain to sail on and damn the torpedoes (the boat was not equipped with torpedoes but like I said they were good divers but they didn't know squat about weaponry). The story goes that after heading to the dive sight the captain looked back at his boat of seasick passengers one of whom asked why they were being tortured this way. It is said the captain (an old NC boy himself), smiled and said "Well, I guess you gotta blame those North Carolina Divers from Hell." And so the name was born. It is the goal of this club to uphold the honor of diving and to safely and surely advance that skill. Also if in the footsteps of those adventurous divers who paved the way for us, we now and again look at the edges of the envelope and smile at the gods of the sea while hanging out over the blue, then all the better. The laughs, the pirate's tales and the fellowship can only make the sport richer.

Who We Are

We are a very loosely organized group of divers. At the present there are no elected officials only straw bosses, but we do have a railroaded Treasurer (she's been in the accounting field a number of years). At any point in time anyone from the group may get up and lead us to a new adventure. Because we have grow so large we may have to organize at bit more in the future but for now.... The status quo remains.

At last count we numbered more then 55 paid members, and growing. With each paid membership you get a NCDH T-shirt, an invitation to all the groups functions and all the perks our members can come up with. This past year the club sponsored 6 local dives, two picnics, a trip to Bonaire, a trip to Bimini, 3 trips to Freeport and a spear fishing contest. We also assisted DAN with their flying after diving tests. We have a monthly newsletter, that is semi regular so to speak.

Our monthly meetings are a chance for all our members to get together and share the friendship associated with scuba diving. We welcome new faces and invite all divers of all skill levels to join in. Our membership consists of different levels of diving experience from Instructor to newly certified OWI divers. And is therefore a great place for new divers to ask questions from the more experienced divers.

Our monthly meetings are held in local restaurants in Greenville NC. We normally visit each restaurant two or three times, then change locations. The meetings all are held on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Each member is notified of the location so you will not go to the wrong location. If you are interested in attending a meeting (we welcome everyone) use the NCDH feedback form you will get an immediate response with the meetings date, time and location. Each meeting will have a time set aside for dinner and social, there is a short business meeting, and sometimes there is a program. Ya'll come see us!
